WHAT IS ZERO BALANCING?

Zero Balancing (ZB) is a holistic therapy that uses special touch to address the relationship between the energy and the structures of the body. ZB was developed in the 1970s by Dr. Fritz Frederick Smith, MD, an osteopathic physician and acupuncturist. Dr. Fritz Smith was a pioneer in the field of integrative medicine who has always been fascinated by the healing power of touch. A ZB session brings a sense of organization and inner harmony and gives a feeling of being revitalized from within. ZB releases deep tension in bones, joints and soft tissues. After a session one feels lighter, freer, more energetic and more in tune with oneself.

THE SESSION

After listening to the client’s goal, the therapist assesses and balances key areas throughout the body, first seated, then lying face up. During the entire session the client is fully dressed. Following a protocol that usually lasts 30 to 45 minutes, finger pressure and gentle traction are used on areas of tension in bones, joints, and soft tissue to create “fulcrums,” or points of balance, around which the body can relax and reorganize.

ZB focuses primarily on the key joints in our skeleton that conduct and balance the forces of gravity, posture and movement. By addressing bone, the deepest and densest tissue in the body, along with energy fields and soft tissues, ZB helps clear blockages in the body’s energy flow, amplify vitality, and contribute to better postural alignment.

ZERO BALANCING EFFECTS

ZB induces a state of deep rest that allows you to feel truly relaxed and refreshed. Regular ZB sessions can help you feel more vital.

Bones and other connective tissues conduct energy. ZB helps release energy flow from the musculoskeletal system to help relieve stress and increase the body’s natural energy.

Blocked body energy often leads to imbalance, discomfort and pain. ZB helps open blocked areas in the body’s “natural shock absorbers”: the tarsal bones in the arches of the feet, the joints between the ribs and spine, the neck, hips and sacrum. Once these areas are free, pain can be released. Improves stability, balance and freedom of movement.

ZB helps create a wonderful feeling of balance, alignment and organization, both internally and externally. When the body is balanced and posture is aligned, it can move freely.

ZB is deeply satisfying. Often, during a session, a feeling of expansion, peace and satisfaction is experienced.

ZB works on multiple levels to release memory patterns held within tissues, which can affect mental, emotional and physical states.

A ZB session can support positive changes in behavior or attitude, giving the person the opportunity to realize personal goals for change. With the therapist’s attention and touch, energy is organized so that old patterns can disappear and resistance to change is reduced.

ZB provides stability to face daily pressures. Receiving ZB regularly allows you to feel joy and satisfaction in all situations in life, both personal and professional.

THE FOUNDER

“Zero Balancing teaches that the deepest currents of energy are in bone, that memory can be held in tissue, that energy fields in the body underlie mind, body and emotions, and that imbalances in the field precede pathology.”

Dr. Fritz Frederick Smith, founder of Zero Balancing

Zero Balancing was developed by Dr. Fritz Frederick Smith in the 1970s. Dr. Smith, born in Ohio, USA, in 1929, earned a doctorate in osteopathy in 1955 and a medical degree in 1961. He practiced as a general practitioner from 1957 to 1972. In the 1960s and 1970s, in his search for a deeper understanding of health, he began to explore yoga, meditation, spiritual teachings in India, Eastern energy medicine, and quantum physics. Dr. Smith trained with Ida Rolf and many others during his exploration into the work that would eventually become Zero Balancing. He became a certified Rolfer and a licensed acupuncturist under Professor Dr. J.R. Worsley at the Chinese College of Acupuncture in England.

Dr. Smith was a bodywork pioneer who described his work as a “hands-on, body-mind system of therapy that integrates body structure and body energy”. He retired from his medical practice in 1991 and for more than 45 years devoted himself fully to practicing and teaching Zero Balancing throughout the world.

He is the author of many articles and two books: Inner Bridges: A Guide to Energy Movement and Body Structure and Alchemy of Touch: Moving towards Mastery through the Lens of Zero Balancing.

Dr. Smith passed on May 7th, 2024.
